This birthing video report conducted by Carte Blanche, a South African journalistic television show, focuses on the reasons for the high cesarean rate in the private maternity sector in South Africa.
The South African Childbirth Educators' Forum reported in 2010 that in the private maternity sector, 67% of women giving birth had caesarean sections. The recommended rate should be around 18%.
In the USA, the cesarean rate is reported to be about 32%.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "in 2007, approximately 1.4 million women had a cesarean birth, representing 32% of all births, the highest rate ever recorded in the United States and higher than rates in most other industrialized countries."
